Hopefully, future Dragon Ball media will remember this little trick of Goku's and make Instant Transmission a key part of his Ultra Instinct fighting style. This technique might even be useful for taking on Destroyer gods, should that ever become necessary, allowing Goku to dodge their destruction energy with pinpoint precision. Constant movement is a major benefit in a fight, and if that constant movement is instantaneous teleportation, then all the better. When it comes to battling godly opponents, it seems like Instant Transmission and Ultra Instinct is one combo that just can't go wrong. Goku ultimately wins the fight, stopping short of delivering a final blast that would've surely taken the goddess out. Aeos has to depend on her ability to see the future in order to counter this, which left her otherwise unable to attack, and Goku was still able to fool her by moving sufficiently fast. One might argue that the hand gesture needed for Instant Transmission takes him out of a fighting stance, but with Ultra Instinct's reflexes, that disadvantage is easily mitigated. These 2 alone would make the ability much believable imo (but tbh he can still just enter the fray very easily this way as well).Instant Transmission has always been a somewhat underutilized trick in Goku's arsenal, even though it's one of his favorites. Obviously teleporting is faster than traveling. Goku's Instant Transmission is literally instant, and Whis has no such technique, but if it were a comparison of flying speeds, Goku would be wrecked. It should also have a long "casting time" which would explain why he doesnt use it in combat. Goku has a faster method of transportation than Whis, but it's a bit of a false equivalency. So what I think instant transmission should look like is not a learnt ki ability, but a divine gift which allows him to do it 1x per day only, so he has to choose carefully when to use it and cant spam it. What I would rather IT have is something like either a cooldown, or a prerequisite to using it, which would make it impossible or difficult to use it in combat (which would explain better why he actually doesnt use it in combat). In IT's case it should be either a limit of range like you said, but I personally think it's still too OP that way since most of the plot takes place on Earth anyway. OP plot Abilities like this need to have some kind of limit to them to make them believable. And since Dragon Ball was already moving away from the adventure stuff…I honestly kinda prefer that they just skip it entirely, instead of mentioning travel gaps and refusing to show them (or worse, making them boring). So while I agree that Instant Transmission wasn’t great (convenient fast travel is usually pretty hacky), it’s more a symptom of change than an independent source of decline. Which was sad for people like me, who really loved the exploring/adventuring parts of the series, but hey, that’s not what was selling at the time. A continuing shift in plot focus and everyone having superspeed flight were the biggest causes of the change, but Instant Transmission was the final nail in the coffin: the journeying days of Dragon Ball were over. But by the time Namek happened, that aspect had become much less important, to the point that the last two or three dragon ball hunts weren’t even shown on-panel. Fighting was always the most important focus, of course, but the adventure part was usually around as well, and even took center stage in some arcs.
